Shopping carts are broken down into three basic categories. 

Application Service Provider (ASP) carts are ones where all your web pages and the checkout process are hosted on the the service providers servers.  An example of this is Yahoo Stores.

Self hosted, software licensed carts, like Miva. are hosted on your server and everything is run on your site.

Ordering System service providers, provide all the functionallity of the checkout process and you maintain all the information about your products or service on your web site. Examples of this type of service are PayPal and 1Cartplus.com

Each of these has advantages and disadvantages.  Let’s explore the differences

ASP carts are best if you’re selling a large number of products and want to maintain full inventory control of the products.   The disadvantages of ASP carts is they can be expensive.  You pay a monthly fee to have your cart hosted.  Also, your design may be limited by the hosting company, you may not have all the flexibility that you want with the cart.

Self hosted carts are the most flexible in terms of design and having access to all the database information you may need to maximize the capabilities of your cart.  This is also, at least in my mind, an excellent solution if you have a lot of items you’re selling. 

The disadvantages of having a self hosted cart is it may take a lot of set up and programming to get the cart working properly.  In addition, you have to deal with secure server certificates, security scanning and issues like that.

Ordering System services are easy to set up, typically you can be set up in just a few minutes, depending on how many items you have for sale.  They handle all the secure server certificates, security scanning and this is the simplest method to get started with. 

On the other hand, these services don’t have inventory control, and in some cases (like PayPal) they don’t look like your web site, so your visitors may not feel comfortable continuing the checkout process.
